Luz Rodriguez

Chemical engineer. Educator. Designer.

For a long time I thought they were different worlds.

Today I know that each one has shaped my way of observing, researching, and creating.

•

RESEARCH TO UNDERSTAND

•

TEACHING TO SHARE

•

DESIGNING TO EXPRESS

It's not three lives. It's three parts of the same one.

THE FIRST GLANCE

BEFORE THE JEWELRY, THERE WAS CHEMISTRY.

My first way of understanding the world was through science.

I studied Chemical Engineering in Aachen, Germany, where I also earned my doctorate.

There, I learned to research, observe, experiment, and, above all, to ask questions.

Years later, I understood that that way of thinking never disappeared.

I also design this way.

RESEARCH TO UNDERSTAND

THE ENGINEER IS STILL HERE.

When I start a collection, I rarely begin by drawing.

First, I need to understand.

I research materials, processes, symbols, stories, and concepts. I read, observe, conduct tests, discard ideas, and start over.

Because for me, designing is not just about finding a pretty shape.

I need to know what I want to tell before I decide what form it will take.

THE SECOND LOOK

TEACHING TO SHARE

Learning was never enough. I needed to share it.

Education taught me that knowledge takes on a new dimension when it is shared.

Teaching has led me to organize ideas, ask questions, listen to other perspectives, and find simple ways to explain what seems complex.

That part of me is also in Luz de Nehca: in showing the processes, explaining the materials, and sharing everything that happens before an idea becomes a piece of jewelry.

THE THIRD LOOK

DESIGN TO EXPRESS

And then came the jewelry.

While living in Aachen, I also began my training as a jewelry designer.

In them, I found a place where all my worlds could meet: material, research, form, hands, and emotion.

I discovered that something as small as a piece of jewelry could contain an enormous story.

And I knew I wanted to keep exploring it.

THREE PERSPECTIVES. ONE SINGLE LIGHT.

Slide image

ENGINEER

Research to understand.

He taught me to ask why, experiment, and look for other ways to do things.

Slide image

EDUCATOR

Learning to share.

It taught me that an idea grows when we are capable of understanding and sharing it.

Slide image

DESIGNER

Creating to express.

It allows me to transform all of the above into jewelry that other people can make their own.

I don't have to choose between them. All three are my way of creating.
